Joseph Sherek Family

My father, John E. Sherek was born in Pennsylvania.  He lived with his parents in Pennsylvania, Indiana and several locations in Minnesota. He had many careers, including working as a machine operator for iron mine near Biwabik.  One of the machines that he used was made in Hershey Pennsylvania.  Then there was a day while at work, when someone was looking for him.  A fellow worker said "That's him on the CANDY machine."  A reference to the name Hershey.  From that day, he came to be known as "Candy" Sherek.

My grandfather, Joseph, was born in Slovenia with the official name of Josef.  This was because of the Austrian Empire's naming rules at the the time. He probably was called "Jo?e," the Slovene version of his name.  When he came to the U.S., he worked as a laborer in the mines.

Joseph died a horrible death after being hit by a car on the side of the road.  His death  happened on payday, and there was no money on his body when it was found.

Joseph's brother John (originally Johann) also settled in the Biwabik area.  (A great portrait of John's family is now available!)  Joseph was the youngest of the three children born to Franc and Marija ?eme.  In addition to John, they had a brother Franc (Jr.).  Marija died in September 1878.  Franc (Sr.) remarried in 1889 to Marija Habjan.  Through this marraige, Joseph gained 6 new half-siblings.  They were Ignacij, Anton, Marija, Teresia, Johanna and Anton.  Johanna died in infancy.
